I was touched to read Amy Dale’s Editor’s Note in the October Edition of the Law Society Journal, in which she spoke of the pain and loss she and her husband experienced on their journey to becoming parents. An invitation to vote in the 2025 Law Society Council Election was recently sent by email to solicitor members who had provided email addresses for communication purposes. The invitation to vote contains a unique link, which is personal to the recipient and must not be shared with, or forwarded to, anyone else. Voting closes on Monday 20 October 2025 at 2.00pm. Minds Count Annual Lecture 2025: tickets now available
Since 2006, the Minds Count Annual Lectures have provided a forum for the legal community to come together and discuss the issues we face as a profession regarding mental health and psychological safety. This year’s lecture will be held at the Federal Court of Australia in Sydney, televised via closed webcast on Thursday 30 October, and will feature keynote addresses from Chief Judge Elizabeth Morris AM (Chief Judge of the Local Court of the Northern Territory), and Judge Michael Allen (Chief Magistrate of the Local Court of New South Wales). Solution Focused Justice - A Cross Jurisdictional Symposium
The Bugmy Bar Book, the NSW Bar Association, Te Kura Kaiwhakawa (New Zealand Institute of Judicial Studies) and the University of Technology Sydney, will host a symposium on solution-focused courts. The event is supported by the NSW Judicial Commission and the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration. Registration is now open for the symposium. In-person seating is limited; however, a livestream will also be available. District Court Civil Practice Note 17 – Defamation List
District Court Civil Practice Note 17 – Defamation List commenced on 7 October 2025 and is available here. This Practice Note explains the operation of the Defamation List in the District Court of New South Wales. It applies to all new and existing proceedings for defamation, breach of privacy (Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024 (Cth)) and injurious falsehood filed in or transferred to the Sydney Registry. This Practice Note replaces District Court Civil Practice Note 6.
