Partner or phisher? Always verify payment requests
A NSW law practice was recently targeted by a fraudster who, using a compromised Partner’s email, requested multiple trust account payments totalling over $4 million. Protect your firm by following these best practices:
- Thoroughly verify new or changed account details
- Confirm unusual or urgent payment requests by phone or in-person
- Keep records of all verification checks
- Regularly update payment and verification procedures
- Train staff to spot suspicious emails or transactions
- Use strong, unique passwords and change them regularly
- Enable multi-factor authentication
- Keep systems and antivirus software updated
- Report cyber irregularities using the s154 Irregularity Form
For guidance, contact Sharon Blake, Chief Trust Account Investigator: trust@lawsociety.com.au or our Cyber Security Resources. Stay alert - your vigilance is the best defence.
