So much of solicitors’ work involves high stakes. A client’s business hangs in the balance; an accused’s liberty is threatened; a child’s safety is at risk. Little wonder, then, that in these and similar circumstances our own mental health can come under significant pressure. My decision to make ‘building solicitors’ mental health and wellbeing’ one of my President’s Priorities this year was reinforced by research in late 2024 showing that a concerning number of lawyers were planning to leave their current employment within a year. Practical Legal Training Information Session
The Legal Profession Admission Board (LPAB) has released a detailed Discussion Paper on Practical Legal Training (PLT), outlining the options for consultation and reform. As part of this process, a consultation session will be held in the Banco Court on Wednesday 5 November 2025 at 5.00pm, facilitated by Chief Justice Andrew Bell, Justice Anthony Payne, Justice Jeremy Kirk and Professor Michael Quinlan. No registration is required.

The International Law Section (ILS) at the Law Council of Australia invites Law Society members to attend the eighth lecture of the ILS International Law and Practice Course 2025. Catherine Raper will share her insights on recent developments in international trade policy. Advocacy in Action at the Law Society of NSW: Review of the operation of doli incapax in NSW for children under 14
In May 2025, the Attorney-General of NSW appointed the Honourable Geoffrey Bellew SC and Mr Jeffrey Loy to conduct a review and report on the operation of the common law presumption of doli incapax in NSW. The Law Society contributed a submission to the review, informed by our Children’s Legal Issues, Criminal Law, Human Rights and Indigenous Issues Committees. On 25 October, the NSW Government released the findings of the report, containing recommendations consistent with the Law Society’s advocacy.

NSW eConveyancing dealing enhancements
NSW Land Registry Services (LRS) will implement a technical upgrade to its eConveyancing system on 10 November 2025. The upgrade includes new enhancements for lodging certain caveats, transfers, and transmission applications with LRS. Residency Requirements: First Home Buyers Assistance Scheme
Revenue NSW asks industry professionals to remind clients that, under the Scheme, they must move into the property within 12 months of settlement and reside there continuously for 12 months. Non-compliance may result in duty repayment, interest, and penalties. Revenue NSW may contact purchasers to confirm compliance with the residence requirement.
