A capability framework to support the legal profession into the future

The legal profession is evolving rapidly, and the Law Society of NSW is committed to supporting our members through change with future-focused guidance and resources.

In an era of advancing technology and new ways of practice, it is more important than ever to strengthen the human attributes and skills that underpin the work of all solicitors.

We are proud to launch the Solicitor Capability Framework, which defines the enduring, non-technical skills and behaviours that reflect best practice in the profession.

The Framework is designed to equip solicitors with the capabilities needed to thrive in practice and to support their ongoing professional development, both today and into the future. Further resources and support will be shared in the coming weeks.

About the Solicitor Capability Framework

The Law Society of New South Wales Solicitor Capability Framework outlines seven Primary Priority Capabilities which the Law Society, informed by the profession, has identified as being of highest relevance for solicitors’ growth and development in the current legal professional environment. These capabilities cover the enduring, non-technical skills and behaviours required by solicitors seeking to work in any sector or area of practice. It also lists a further seven Secondary Priority Capabilities, which complement the Primary Priority Capabilities to describe the full suite of capabilities that help drive excellence in legal practice.
