The Role

What is the role of a CNS Solicitor?
As an integral and valued member of the Custody Notification Service (CNS) team, a key part of the Criminal Law Practice, you will provide 24-hour legal advice and support over the phone to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in police custody. This includes assessing wellbeing risks, notifying families or support staff, liaising with police, and maintaining detailed records. Not limited to providing phone based advice, you can also expect to:
- Assist with local Criminal Law matters, including court appearances and client representation when required.
- Liaise with families, police, and the Managing Solicitor to ensure appropriate support and legal action is provided.
- Develop and maintain stable, productive, professional, and collaborative intra-office working relationships between all staff members.

Who is eligible for this role?

What's the focus of the role?

The Courts we service
- Wagga Wagga District Court sits as a full-time court with feeder courts including Wagga Wagga, Junee, Young, Gundagai, Tumut and Narrandera.
- Albury District Court has feeder courts including Albury, Finley, Corowa, Tumbarumba and Holbrook.
The Role
Take on meaningful, impactful work that makes a difference in your community. As an ODPP solicitor you will manage a large and varied criminal law practice and be responsible for:
- Assessing the evidence and recommending appropriate charges.
- Attending case conferences and negotiating early guilty pleas where appropriate.
- Conducting lists, hearings and other complex advocacy work in the Local, Children’s and District Courts.
- Instructing Crown Prosecutors and other prosecutors in trials and sentences in the District Court and Supreme Courts.
- Providing advice to and on behalf of the Director.

Flexible working arrangements are available in all offices. This is a general recruitment, and a talent pool will be created to fill ongoing and temporary vacancies within our Wagga Wagga office which may arise over the next 18 months.
About you
- You will have a degree or diploma in law and admission as an Australian legal practitioner.
- You will have obtained a Practising Certificate issued by the Law Society of NSW prior to commencing.
- You will have experience in criminal law, including advocacy experience.
- You will be able to actively listen, explain complex concepts and arguments to individuals and groups, tailor communication to various audiences, and write fluently in a range of styles and formats.
- You will have sound decision making skills, the ability to problem solve, manage your time, project manage and keep organised.
- You will need to have a current driver's licence.

Position description
Illawarra Legal Centre’s (ILC) Generalist Solicitors provide free legal services to people living in the Illawarra Region. ILC is committed to assisting people to access their legal rights. The Generalist Solicitor provides advice, casework and community legal education across a range of legal areas including employment, victims’ support, discrimination, and generalist law, prioritising clients experiencing social and economic disadvantage. This position is primarily based at ILC’s office based in Wollongong. The position will require travel to outreach locations, across the Illawarra and occasional out of hours work to support evening advice.
Essential Criteria
1. Immediately eligible to hold a practicing certificate issued by the Law Society of NSW.
2. Demonstrated experience providing legal services to people who have experienced social and/ or economic disadvantage.
3. Self-management skills with strong attention to detail, and ability to work to deadlines while delivering high quality services.
4. Excellent all round communication skills, with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and respectfully in a way that can be understood by our clients.
