When my predecessor as President, Brett McGrath, launched the Law Society of NSW’s Climate Change – Practitioner Guidance in February last year, he noted that delivering this project would help “arm our members with the best advice and support that we can”. A month later, the Commonwealth Government introduced legislation creating a mandatory climate reporting regime that the Chair of the Australian Securities & Investments Commission, Joe Longo later described as “the biggest change to corporate reporting in a generation”. Victims Legislation Amendment (Victims Registers) Act 2025
The Victims Legislation Amendment (Victims Registers) Act 2025 commenced on 1 September 2025. The Act introduces a positive obligation on the government agencies responsible for administering the victims’ registers to notify victims of certain serious offenders of both the existence of the registers and the victim’s eligibility to be registered. Updates to Means Test approved by Legal Aid NSW Board
The Legal Aid NSW Board has approved changes to the Means Test, including an increase to the housing deduction for metropolitan areas and the allowable asset amounts. See Policy Bulletin 2025/9 Changes to the Means Test for details.

Changes to criminal law policies approved by Legal Aid NSW Board
The Legal Aid NSW Board has approved changes to the criminal law policies including the introduction of the Simplified Means Test for Local Court criminal law matters and District Court appeals. See Policy Bulletin 2025/8 Changes to the criminal law policies for details.

ASIC Regulatory Simplification Program – Report 813
On 3 September 2025, ASIC issued Regulatory Simplification Report 18 outlining initiatives undertaken to simplify regulation and seeking feedback on progress. The key initiatives are in the following areas:
- Improving access to regulatory information.
- Reducing complexity in regulatory instruments.
- Making it easier to interact with ASIC.
The report also highlights areas of law reform proposed to simplify regulation. More information on the Program is available here.
