Local Court of NSW: new Bail Division underway
The Chief Magistrate of the Local Court of NSW has established a Bail Division to centralise weekday adult bail matters across NSW. The Bail Division will commence from TODAY. All matters will be heard virtually, with all participants appearing by audio visual link. The Bail Division will operate up to seven virtual courts, grouped by region. Matters will generally be heard in order of readiness, though they may be reassigned on the day to another courtroom at the discretion of the presiding Magistrate to ensure efficient case progression. Criminal law practitioners will have already received an email from the Law Society of NSW with details on how to access the hearings for each Bail Division court room. More details on how to access the Division are also available here. The Practice Note can be viewed here.

Advocacy in Action
The Law Society NSW welcomes the recent Report on Proposals to increase voter engagement, participation and confidence from the NSW Parliament Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters. Several of our proposals are reflected in the Report’s recommendations, including a mandatory civic education curriculum, funding to improve civics and electoral literacy, and broadening accessibility to voting for marginalised voters. Our submission to the Inquiry on this issue last year, informed by our Public Law and Indigenous Issues Committees, highlighted the importance of voter engagement, digital resilience, and tackling misinformation. It also emphasised the value of civic education, electoral literacy, and accessibility to voting. We look forward to the NSW Government’s response to the Report later this year.
