It follows the regular gathering of Regional Law Society Presidents from across the state, and precedes Friday’s Rural Issues Conference. Law Society Council Election: Final hours to vote
Voting in the 2025 Law Society Council election closes today, Monday 20 October 2025 at 2.00pm. If you have not yet done so, please consider voting. A reminder email was sent to all members who have not yet voted on Thursday 16 October. That email contains a unique voting link, which is personal to the recipient and must not be shared with, or forwarded to, anyone else.

NSW Silk Bows: Joint ceremonial sitting of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 1) & (Division 2)
A joint ceremonial sitting of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 1) and the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 2) will be held on Thursday 23 October 2025 at 9.15am to recognise the Senior Counsel appointed in and for the State of New South Wales in 2025. The ceremonial sitting will be held in Courtroom 7C, Level 7, Lionel Bowen Building, 97-99 Goulburn Street, Sydney. The ceremonial sitting will be followed by morning tea.

Waverley, Newtown and Burwood Local Courts: Changes from 20 October 2025
The Local Court will cease sitting at Waverley from Monday 20 October 2025 until at least Wednesday 24 December 2025 due to renovations occurring at Waverley Police Station and the expected noise from these works. Waverley Local Court will sit at Newtown Local Court during this period. Newtown Local Court will relocate to Burwood Local Court. More information is available on the Local Court website under “News”.

Reflections on justice: 2025 Paul Byrne Memorial Lecture
On Thursday 30 October, The Honourable Justice Ian G. Harrison will deliver the 2025 Paul Byrne Memorial Lecture at Sydney Law School on “Have I learned anything about sentencing?”. Drawing on decades of experience, including his recent appointment as Chief Judge at Common Law, Justice Harrison will explore the evolution of sentencing and justice in NSW. The lecture honours the late Paul Byrne SC, whose legacy continues through the Paul Byrne Memorial Fund supporting the Sydney Institute of Criminology’s research and education. UCPR Form 45: Registration or filing of certificate of judgment or order
On 7 October 2025 the Uniform Rules Committee approved an amendment to UCPR Form 45 (version 6): Registration or filing of certificate of judgment or order, available here. The form has been amended to make it clear that a non-monetary order can be registered. Version 6 includes alternative options for the registration of a monetary judgment or order, a non-monetary judgment or order, or a judgment or order that includes both monetary and non-monetary components. The amendments also require different information to be entered depending on the type of judgment or order being registered.
