Each of our journeys into this profession are different, though there will be common features we share with colleagues, and even with those yet to take the oath as an officer of the court. I know I am not the only one among us to develop a love and fascination for the law while still in high school. Reminder - CPD year concludes on 31 March 2023

There are less than three weeks remaining of the current CPD year, concluding on 31 March 2023. 
It is a statutory condition of a practising certificate to comply with CPD and you will be asked to declare your CPD compliance as part of your practising certificate renewal. If you cannot comply by 31 March 2023, you may be eligible for additional time to do so, or, you may apply for an exemption if eligible. See further information on our CPD page.

Welcome Ceremonial Sittings of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia

There are upcoming ceremonial Sittings to Welcome Judges of Division 1 and Division 2 Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. Onsite attendance is by invitation only due to limited seating. Please find the YouTube links below to view the ceremonies.

Changes impacting lawyers who are registered migration agents​​​​​​

Supervised legal practitioners who are also registered migration agents with OMARA are reminded that from 22 March 2023 they will be unable to continue to be registered with OMARA and hold an Australian practising certificate. They must instead either apply to remove condition 2 from their practising certificate and ensure their practise is through a qualified entity or surrender their practising certificate and continue as a registered migration agent. There are some exceptions to this requirement – please see the Ethics & Quarterly article for further information.

Emerging challenges in the management of sexual assault trials

The Courts of the Future Network in conjunction with Monash University Law Faculty & the Victorian Juries Commissioner's Office will be hosting a conference on Friday 9 June 2023. Practitioners and researchers, if you have a unique perspective and you would like to share at the conference, please email the relevant details, including a summary of your proposed contribution and a brief CV to Associate Professor Horan Jacqui Horan@monash.edu.

Survey - AIFS Evaluation of the Children’s Contact Services Activity
The Australian Institute of Family Studies has launched a 25-30 minute survey as part of the AIFS Evaluation of the Children’s Contact Services Activity. The survey seeks the views and experiences of professionals involved in managing, operating, and providing supervision services in CCSs, and professionals involved in referring clients to these services (including legal practitioners). 
The survey is open until 29 March 2023 and available here.

Anti-Money Laundering/Counter Terrorism Finance Working Group
The Law Society is actively participating in an anti-money laundering/counter terrorism financing (AML/CTF) working group, led by the Law Council of Australia (the WG). Key priorities of the WG include improving the legal profession’s risk mitigation strategies in relation to AML/CTF as well as increasing its engagement with AML/CTF issues. The Law Society will work to ensure the profession is as well informed as possible in relation to AML/CTF matters.
