PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Updated COVID-19 health advice plus $27.9 million will be provided to expand specialist drug court to Dubbo  ​​​

The lead up to tomorrow’s 2021-22 State Budget has included the exciting news that $27.9 million will be provided to expand the specialist Drug Court to Dubbo in the state’s Orana region. NSW COVID-19 statistics
NSW recorded two new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm last night, both of which were announced yesterday morning. NSW Health has also been notified of two new locally acquired cases overnight and these cases will be included in tomorrow's numbers. The total number of cases in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic stands at 5,460. There are now 11 cases linked to the Bondi cluster. A list of venues, including a number of sites in the Sydney CBD, Eastern Suburbs and Inner West attended by infectious cases, is updated by NSW Health here as information is confirmed so please check regularly. Mask requirements in seven Local Government Areas
Over the weekend, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced mask wearing will remain in effect until 12:01am Thursday, 24 June 2021. During this period, the wearing of masks will continue to be compulsory on public transport, in taxis and rideshare services in Sydney, Blue Mountains, Wollongong and Shellharbour. Further, there are additional mask wearing requirements for some indoor areas in seven Local Government Areas (LGAs): City of Sydney, Bayside, Canada Bay, Inner West, Randwick, Waverly and Woollahra. In these areas, masks are also required in retail shops (including supermarkets), theatres and aged-care facilities. Details here.
Updated requirements for visitors to the Law Society of NSW
As the Law Society of NSW is located within the City of Sydney LGA, masks are required for visitors to our premises who are accessing areas available to members of the public including Access to Justice, Library, Reception and Print and Mailroom.  This is in addition to COVID Safe check in requirements for all visitors. Staff working in departments which provide services to members of the public who attend our premises will also be required to wear a mask. The NSW Government rules around mask wearing can be found here.
NSW Supreme Court update
The Chief Justice has directed the following arrangements will apply for the period of these temporary restrictions:
Masks should be worn in all public corridors and waiting areas within that part of the court building solely occupied by the Supreme Court. Everyone in a courtroom must wear a mask, unless:
  1. The person concerned is an active participant in the proceedings namely the presiding judge, a practitioner who is responsible for presenting the case in court or a witness giving evidence.
  2. one of the exemptions stated in the Public Health Order applies; or
  3. at the discretion of the presiding judge.
Supreme Court Jurors and Jury Trials
Jurors are strongly encouraged to wear a mask at all times. Masks will be provided to jurors by the Office of the Sheriff.​​​​​

Corrective Services NSW e-Brief scheme
A reminder to legal practitioners that the e-Brief scheme has been developed to ensure that inmates are able to access their legal brief while in custody. Applications for an e-Brief laptop can be entered by a legal practitioner using the online form on the CSNSW website.

REMINDER - Electronic Duties Returns (EDR) Annual Certification
Revenue NSW is currently conducting an EDR certification to ensure all EDR clients maintain suitability for the EDR service. All EDR approval holders have received an email from edrannualcertification@revenue.nsw.gov.au requesting completion of the certification. If you haven’t already, please complete by 30/06/2021. Failure to complete the certification will result in your EDR account being suspended. Read more.

Changes to the Franchising Code of Conduct
Many of the reforms to come into effect under the Competition and Consumer (Industry Codes-Franchising) Amendment (Fairness in Franchising) Regulation 2021 providing franchisees with more information and remedies affect franchise agreements entered into, renewed or extended on or after 1 July 2021. However, dispute resolution reforms apply to disputes notified from 2 June 2021. Changes to the disclosure document will apply from 1 November 2021.

Change to the definition of 'consumer' under the ACL
The definition of ‘consumer’ which is fundamental to the Australian Consumer Law’s (ACL) consumer protection provisions will change on 1 July 2021 to capture any person who acquires goods or services for an amount not exceeding $100,000 (currently $40,000) where the goods or services were acquired for personal, domestic or household use. Revenue NSW annual indexation of duties thresholds and base duty amounts
In 2019 NSW Government introduced annual indexation of duties thresholds and base duty amounts (aligned to CPI). This impacts the general rate of duty and premium duty.
The new indexed amounts apply from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022 and are now available on the Revenue NSW website and calculators.
Division 3 Indexation of amounts in the Duties Act 1997 provides detailed information relating to annual indexation.

Legal Aid NSW Board approves changes to the Criminal Law Guidelines
The Legal Aid NSW Board has approved changes to the Criminal Law Guidelines to ensure Aboriginal women are represented in the Local Court even when there is no risk of gaol. The changes apply to applications determined on or after 15 June 2021. Please see Policy Bulletin 2021 No. 3 for further details.

NSW Land Registry Services fees and e-transaction production receipt
NSW LRS fees for products and services involving land titles, plans, property information and the Water Access Licence Register will change from 1 July 2021. NSW LRS has also updated the E-Transaction Production Receipt to include a phone number to assist with error resolution. Read more
