PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

We all have a duty of care for each other

COVID-19 has highlighted the vulnerability we all face in terms of our health and professional lives. A perusal of the headlines this past week has heralded the beginning of a period of what is likely to be significant economic downturn.

It is a mark of a heeding of the lessons of the past that in recent days there has been much focus on the likely impact of the recent and current events on the mental health and wellbeing of all Australians. As we know, the legal profession is far from immune from having its own susceptibility to mental health distress, and it is timely that we carefully consider how easily we, as a community, will respond to the times before us. The Law Society is particularly mindful of the need to provide best practice and relevant mental health and support services to all practitioners. Continue reading >

Golden Gavel applications – deadline extended to 29 May
Entries for the Golden Gavel – Covid Edition competition have been extended. Ten brave competitors will be given 24 hours to produce a three to five-minute video which will be uploaded to LSJ.com.au for viewers to vote for their favourite. Learn more.
National Mental Health and Wellbeing Pandemic Response Plan
National Cabinet has endorsed a national plan that sets out the mental health and wellbeing priority areas for the overall response to the COVID-19 pandemic, building on the mental health supports announced by states and territories including NSW. More here.
Physical distancing on transport key to a safe pathway back to work
The NSW Government has today released its plan to provide a ‘COVID-19 safe’ transport network.

SIRA’s Dispute Resolution Service Legal Portal
SIRA’s Dispute Resolution Service (DRS) launched a dedicated Legal Portal last week for legal practitioners in the CTP scheme. The portal offers an online platform for practitioners to lodge applications, respond to replies, communicate with the DRS and track dispute progress. Use of the portal is mandatory for insurer representatives, and preferred for claimant representatives. DRS is holding a webinar session on how to access and use the portal on 26 May 2020. Personal Appearances in the District Court NSW from 1 June 2020
On and from 1 June 2020, there will be some changes to the general policy that there are to be no personal appearances in the District Court of NSW.  These changes are in addition to the announcement on 11 May 2020 of the intention to resume jury trials on a limited basis in the Sydney District Court, Parramatta District Court and the Newcastle District Court.
