Police Powers:

Rights and responsibilities

May 2019

Wingham

The aim of this day is to educate local community (Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal) about the powers of police within the community, what options may be available for people who feel that police may be targeting them unfairly and to minimise escalation that may occur between individuals and police.

A community information day will be held in the Bushland Estate, Taree. The estate where the day is being held is an area with a history of issues between police and the community. The community is approximately 50% Indigenous. Solicitors from ALS, Legal Aid and CLC will present information and take general questions on four main topics that have been identified as areas of concern through community consultation.

These include; questioning by police, police powers to search, police powers to enter a premises and what are my rights if I am under arrest. People will then have the opportunity to privately speak to a solicitor and then there will be a free BBQ lunch.
