PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Support for interoperability between Electronic Lodgment Network Operators (ELNOs)

I would like to take the opportunity this week to acknowledge and thank those members of our profession who have volunteered to serve on our policy committees throughout 2020, especially as we dealt with major regulatory and procedural changes during the pandemic. This past month has been particularly busy, with the Law Society making or contributing to a plethora of policy submissions, including in relation to: the Inquiry into the high level of First Nations people in custody and oversight and review of deaths in custody; draft principles underpinning the Federal Judicial Commission; and a review of the Bail Act 2013, just to name a few. Continue reading >

NEWS
Impact of COVID-19 on CPD compliance
Given the extraordinary circumstances surrounding COVID-19, the Law Society understands that solicitors may need to complete more than five CPD units through private study of audio/visual material. This means that for the 2020-21 CPD year, we will not enforce the five-unit cap on private study of audio/visual material. All other requirements under the CPD rules must be satisfied unless an exemption or extension of time is granted. Further information.
Professional Support Unit (PSU)
We are pleased to announce the launch of our new Professional Support Unit (PSU) website hub. PSU brings together the expertise of the Costs, Ethics and Regulatory Compliance Units in one easy-access hub. You will find checklists, fact sheets, guidelines, information about the unit’s functions, as well as the Costs and Ethics Committees, CPD offerings and contact details. PSU is committed to providing you with confidential guidance, when the right path is not so clear. Click here to contact and learn more.

Elder abuse of clients – what support can solicitors offer?
What are the signs that your client may be experiencing elder abuse? What can you do about it? How can you report the suspected abuse without breaching your professional obligations?  “Elder abuse of clients – what support can solicitors offer?” is a new Law Society resource that discusses these issues. See the Elder Law and Ethics sections of the Law Society website.

Viewing of sensitive evidence in criminal cases
The ODPP has recently implemented a new process, a Secure Timeboxed Viewer (STV), which enables secure access for legal practitioners to view sensitive evidence through a portal from a personal computer or device. The STV obviates the need for legal practitioners to attend police stations or DPP offices to view sensitive evidence such as JIRT proceedings. Please view the External User Guide, which explains how the STV works and the steps users need to take to obtain access.
