PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
On Friday last week, I launched the Law Society’s Election Platform for the NSW poll on 25 March 2023. |
On Friday last week, I launched the Law Society’s Election Platform for the NSW poll on 25 March 2023. I want to thank each and every member of our policy committees who worked on putting together this comprehensive package of ideas for whomever forms government after polling day.
As I say in my opinion piece which accompanied the launch, the Law Society of NSW (Law Society) stands ready to assist government with careful and considered input into the complex policy questions confronting our society. We look forward to reading how the people putting themselves forward to govern for the next four years respond to our proposals.
Finding membership value
I said last week that in my remaining editions of Monday Briefs I’d be highlighting some of the ways the Law Society provides practical help to you in your businesses and workplaces.
Planning your practice’s future without you
The 2021 Annual Profile of Solicitors in NSW that we published mid-year revealed to us that 61 per cent of solicitors in private practice in our state are sole practitioners. If you’re in this very large cohort, you’ll no doubt have considered what should happen if you’re suddenly unable to manage your practice.
On these occasions, the Law Society is obliged to appoint a manager, to take over the day to day running of the practice and to make decisions affecting it.
The Law Society developed a form where you’re able to nominate your Personal Legal Representative and an alternate to give you a say in who manages your affairs in the event you’re unable to.
While the Law Society will not be bound by your Nomination, it will give preferential consideration to your appointing your Nominated Personal Representative (or Alternate) rather than to the appointment of a person nominated by the Law Society.
Christmas cheer to your door
On a cheerier note, our head chef Justin King has curated two wonderful hampers that will complete your festive feast, available to members within the Sydney metropolitan area (postcodes 2000–2249).
The dinner hamper for delivery on Friday, 23 December includes sage and walnut stuffed turkey breast with apple gravy and roasted vegies. The hamper of Christmas treats available for delivery on Friday 16 and Friday 23 December includes a 450 gram Christmas pudding, which I had the pleasure of giving a stir for luck. Order either or both here before 10am on the Tuesday before your desired delivery.
Don’t forget that every hamper purchased supports my charity Sober in the Country.
