Anniversary of the Mabo decision, plus court-based diversion program for people with a cognitive impairment

Last Thursday 3 June marked the anniversary of the Mabo decision in the Australian High Court which overturned the legal concept of "terra nullius". The Mabo decision, which paved the way for the Native Title Act in Australia, marked a significant moment in the reconciliation journey in Australia. Reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians is necessary for the wellbeing of Australia as a nation and as part of action to close the unacceptable gap in life expectancy between First Nations People and other Australians. Continue reading >

Practising certificate renewal reminder to practitioners
To engage in legal practice after 30 June 2021, you must hold a practising certificate. If you have not yet lodged your renewal application, please do so here. The Legal Profession Uniform Law does not permit the Law Society to accept practising certificate renewal applications submitted after 30 June 2021. Read more
Associate membership renewals are now open

New indexed limits for costs disputes
The Legal Services Council has released the Indexed Amounts Notice which will apply in NSW from 1 July 2021. The effect of the Notice is to index the $10,000 and $100,000 limits on the NSW Legal Services Commissioner’s jurisdiction to deal with costs disputes under sections 291-293 of the Legal Profession Uniform Law. From 1 July, the indexed amounts will be $12,880 and $128,760 respectively. The calculation is based on CPI in accordance with rule 111A of the General Uniform Rules. More information is available on the Legal Services Council website.

​Applications for appointment as a Costs Assessor
Applications are sought from legal practitioners of at least 5 years post-admission experience to be appointed as Costs Assessors. Appointments are expected to take effect from 1 January 2022 for a period of up to three (3) years. Learn more
