This past week we marked another milestone in the 178-year history of our association with the appointment of the next Chief Executive Officer of the Law Society.

New Solicitor Outreach Service
The Law Society’s new Solicitor Outreach Service (SOS) provides NSW solicitors direct access to a dedicated and confidential mental health and wellbeing support service. Call 1800 592 296 to access up to three free psychological sessions per financial year, or to speak with a psychologist if in crisis or distress. Learn more

NSW-Victoria Border restrictions
New border restrictions with Victoria will see a stricter border zone apply along the Murray River from midnight Tuesday 21 July 2020.
All currently issued permits and any issued between now and the commencement of the border zone will expire at midnight on Tuesday 21 July.
People will have to reapply for a new permit to enter NSW from Victoria if they remain eligible to.

Discretionary trusts, testamentary trusts and foreign surcharges
Following the assent of the State Revenue Legislation Further Amendment Act 2020 on 24 June 2020, Revenue NSW has published Commissioner’s Practice Note 004v2 Foreign surcharges and discretionary trusts. The Practice Note outlines how surcharge purchaser duty and surcharge land tax will be applied in situations where land is held by a discretionary trust and the exemptions available. Practitioners are alerted to the critical dates and transitional provisions in relation to the amendment of discretionary trusts and their impact on wills and testamentary trusts.
