PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Former Law Society President appointed judge 

Back in 1989 when Sir Tim Berners-Lee first wrote a paper proposing an “information management” system that would become known as the World Wide Web, none of us could have envisaged the impact it would have on the way we live, work and communicate. Thirty years on, the way we use technology in every aspect of our lives has changed beyond recognition,  more than 50 per cent of the world’s population is online, and worldwide, more than two billion websites exist. In marking the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web on 12 March, Berners-Lee emphasised that what was important to him in 2019, in the context of "fake news" and political disruption, is that the web “serves humanity well”. Appointments to the family court of Australia

A ceremonial sitting of the Family Court will be held in Courtroom 7C, Level 7, Lionel Bowen Building, 97-99 Goulburn Street, Sydney, at 4:30pm on Thursday 21 March to welcome the Honourable Justice Robert Harper as a Judge of the Family Court of Australia. Email inquiry
 
Judge Joshua Wilson and Judge Robert Harper have been appointed to the Family Court of Australia. These appointments elevate Judge Wilson and Judge Harper from their current positions as judges of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia. Read more

Draft Terms of Reference for a Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability

The Australian Government has announced the beginning of a public consultation on the draft terms of reference for a Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. The consultation seeks feedback on issues that may be confronting and distressing. Sometimes words can cause sadness or distress, or trigger traumatic memories for people, particularly people who have experienced past abuse or trauma. Read more

Land tax registration deadline – 31 March 2019
Revenue NSW has requested practitioners be reminded that where clients own property in NSW that they don’t live in, such as vacant land, or a commercial property, land tax may be payable. Surcharge land tax may also be payable, if the client is a foreign person. Clients can register online by 31 March 2019.

Family Law Amendment (Family Violence and Cross-examination of Parties) Act 2018 commenced on 11 March 2019
The amendments protect victims of family violence by banning personal cross-examination in certain circumstances in family law proceedings, and requiring instead that cross examination be conducted by a legal representative. The amendments will apply to cross examinations that occur after 11 September 2019, in proceedings instituted before or after that commencement. Read more

His Honour Judge Henson, Chief Magistrate, has amended Practice Note Civ 1. In addition to the requirements for expert evidence that was part of the consultation, the amendments consolidate this practice note with the Online Court Practice Note. This practice note will commence on and from 15 March 2019.
