Space law: the final frontier

With claims that by 2040 the moon will support a population of more than 1,000 people, and another 10,000 will be visiting the moon in that same year, attention is turning to the role the law and lawyers will play in space exploration.

Near space is abuzz with human-initiated activity as we strive towards a sustainable future beyond Earth. With private companies like Moon Express, Elon Musk’s SpaceX, and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin setting their sights on missions to the moon in 2021 and beyond, the space race is no longer between countries, it’s between companies. There are plans for private tourism, mining for water and rare minerals, 3D printing in space and tracking the tens of thousands of objects larger than a softball currently in the earth’s near orbit. More work for less pay: data exposes widening pay gap for barristers
Female barristers are receiving more briefs but are not being paid proportionately for the extra work, according to annual data collected on the Law Council of Australia’s Equitable Briefing Policy.

Notice of Law Society 2019 Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting of The Law Society of New South Wales will be held on Thursday 24 October 2019 at 4.30pm on Level 3, Law Society premises, 170 Phillip Street, Sydney. All Solicitor Members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

2019 edition of the contract for the sale and purchase of land
We understand that the Government’s off the plan reforms are expected to commence on 1 December 2019, with the amending regulation to be published soon. We will release a new edition of the contract for the sale and purchase of land shortly after the Conveyancing (Sale of Land) Amendment Regulation 2019 is published. Further information will be provided in Monday Briefs.

Off the plan reforms
The Office of the Registrar General has published information about the reforms, including the new disclosure statement to be included in residential off the plan contracts from 1 December 2019. Practitioners are also alerted to the new 10 business days cooling-off period for residential off the plan contracts, and the transitional arrangements for the change in the statutory cooling off notice.
