President's message

NSW state election results and CPD deadline approaching

While we are still awaiting the final distribution of seats after Saturday’s state election, it has been confirmed that the NSW Coalition, led by Gladys Berejiklian, has been returned to power for an historic third term.

On behalf of the state’s legal profession, I congratulate Gladys Berejiklian on the election result and on becoming the first woman to be elected Premier of NSW by the people.

Premier Berejiklian’s post-election speech on Saturday night acknowledged the historical significance of her win with her statement, “What’s most important to me is that no matter what your background, where you live, what your circumstances, everybody in this state has the chance to be their best. A state in which someone with a long surname - and a woman - can be the Premier of New South Wales.”

The Law Society of NSW looks forward to working with the re-elected Coalition and building on the close relationship established with the NSW Attorney General, the Hon. Mark Speakman MP,  as we move forward to address the key priorities for legal reform that we outlined prior to the election.

On another note, members should be aware that the deadline for completing their required 10 units for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is this coming Sunday, 31 March 2019.

The Law Society’s CPD program is one of the largest in Australia and includes a range of sessions covering substantive law, professional skills, practice management, wellbeing and other mandatory areas such as ethics and professional responsibility. Each year, the Law Society delivers over 300 face to face sessions, over 100 eLearning modules and podcasts, and numerous online and webinar sessions, meeting the needs of both city solicitors and those in regional areas.

For those members who are yet to fulfil their CPD units, our online portal LawInform has an extensive range of interactive CPD seminars created “by the profession, for the profession”, covering all mandatory knowledge areas as well as an extensive range of substantive law updates in specific practice areas. The courses are practical, relevant, and designed for practitioners at all stages of their careers. LawInform also has a CPD tracker so you can easily keep a record of your CPD units. Law Society members receive a 30 per cent discount on all courses (except the Practice Management Course). Visit LawInform today to register for a CPD seminar before 31 March.
