President's message

We stand with Sri Lanka

I trust that all solicitors enjoyed a restful Easter break.

As this is the first Monday Briefs following Easter, as your President I record my dismay in the wake of the Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka and offer my condolences on behalf of the entire NSW legal profession.

More than 250 people, including two Australians, were killed, with many more injured, in a series of despicable attacks on churches and hotels in Colombo.

This past weekend, Law Society CEO Michael Tidball, in his capacity as Secretary-General of LAWASIA, on my behalf delivered a letter of condolence to Upul Jayasuriya, Sri Lankan representative on LAWASIA’s Executive Committee. We have colleagues in Sri Lanka through the work of LAWASIA – indeed, in 2016, the 29th LAWASIA Conference took place in Colombo.

Such acts are deeply inhuman and always unjust. The UN Security Council has reaffirmed that terrorism constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. We reassert the right of every citizen around the world to feel safe and be free of violence.  We stand with our neighbour Sri Lanka, which next month marks 10 years since the end of its civil war, in asserting the inviolability of the rule of law and its application to people everywhere.

Elizabeth Espinosa, Law Society President
