It’s always exciting to create tangible outcomes in those areas that I’ve identified as my President’s Priorities this year. That’s especially so, with my first Priority, of honouring solicitors’ service to their communities. As I said in my Opening of Law Term speech, pro bono work “reflects a lawyer’s duty to uphold the rule of law and the principle of access to justice.” Continue reading >

The Law Society of NSW's Lawyer Mediator Accreditation Scheme (LMA Scheme): Exclusive to solicitor members
We now offer a straightforward path to accreditation, allowing members to distinguish themselves in the market as both practising solicitors and qualified mediators. LMA Scheme membership will assure people seeking mediation that they are in the hands of an expert problem solver, someone backed by legal experience and stringent professional standards. Solicitors currently accredited as mediators, or those who have successfully completed an approved mediator training in the past six months, are invited to apply. More information can be found here.

Advocacy in action
The Law Society NSW welcomes the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission’s recent recommendations in its Final Report, following its 2024 Issues Paper on bail compliance checks in NSW. Informed by our Criminal Law, Children’s Legal Issues, and Indigenous Issues Committees, our submission raised key concerns, including, in our view, impermissible reliance by Police on the implied licence doctrine to conduct bail compliance checks. The Commission’s Final Report made recommendations that reflect the view that in all matters where authority to conduct bail compliance checks on private property is sought, the NSW Police Force should seek enforcement conditions from the courts under s 30 of the Bail Act 2013 (NSW), and that reliance on the doctrine of implied licence in this context should be discontinued. To read our submissions, please see our Policy Submissions 2025 page.
