Regulatory update
The Migration Amendment (Regulation of Migration Agents) Act 2020 was passed by both Houses of Parliament on 15 June 2020 and comes into effect on 22 March 2021 (the new legislation). The new legislation will amend the Migration Act 1958, so that Australian legal practitioners holding practising certificates that are not subject to supervision will no longer be required or entitled, to register with the OMARA as migration agents. Live streaming of welcome ceremonies for newly admitted lawyers
From Thursday 12 February, all welcome ceremonies for newly admitted lawyers will be live streamed on the Supreme Court's YouTube Channel. All ceremonies will be available in the same location (see 'Playlists') for viewing after the event. The ceremonies are broadcast from the Banco Courtroom, which is used for all formal ceremonies held at the Supreme Court.

Build-to-rent
The Build-to-Rent scheme was announced last year as a strategy to improve rental housing options, boost construction and support jobs. The scheme will provide eligible build-to-rent properties with a 50% reduction in land value for Land Tax purposes. Australian based developers that are foreign persons, will receive an exemption from Surcharge Land Tax and Surcharge Purchaser Duty. More information here.

Version 6 of the Model Participation Rules (MPR) and the Model Operating Requirements (MOR) have now been published on the ARNECC website and will take effect in jurisdictions from 12 April 2021.

Personal Injury Commission commences operations
The Personal Injury Commission has today commenced operations. Watch the Ceremonial Sitting of the Commission at the District Court of NSW on the Commission’s new website. The final ‘Towards the PIC’ newsletter is available here and provides updates about the systems that will be in place for motor accident applications, the Commission’s forms and contact details. Users of the motor accidents portal will now be able to upload all application annexures and reply annexures as one document, provided they are indexed and paginated. The 10th edition of the 'Towards the PIC' is available here and provides details about the appeal and review time limits in the Commission’s Motor Accidents and Workers Compensation Divisions.
