PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

A defamation regime fit for purpose and fit for our times

After 18 months of consultation, it is widely expected that today’s meeting of the Council of Attorneys-General (CAG) will reach agreement on a proposed national reform of Australia’s defamation laws.

NSW Attorney General, Mark Speakman SC, who has led the reform process, will today ask his state and territory counterparts to agree to the Draft Amendments to the Model Defamation Provisions. Continue reading >

New Solicitor Outreach Service
The Law Society’s new Solicitor Outreach Service (SOS) provides NSW solicitors direct access to a dedicated and confidential mental health and wellbeing support service. Call 1800 592 296 to access up to three free psychological sessions per financial year, or to speak with a psychologist if in crisis or distress. Learn more

COVID-19 Commission turns full focus on recovery
Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, says he is pleased to announce today that the National COVID-19 Coordination Commission is moving into a new mode, shifting its focus to concentrate on creating jobs and stimulating our economy as we learn to live with this pandemic. More here.
JobKeeper and income support extended
The JobKeeper Payment will be extended by six months to 28 March 2021 and the temporary Coronavirus Supplement for those on income support will be extended until 31 December 2020. More here.
