PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The push for more Legal Aid funding in NSW

It was pleasing to see NSW Attorney General Mark Speakman has promised to respond to calls from the profession for more funding for Legal Aid in NSW by the 2020 Budget or sooner. Appearing at the Budget Estimates hearing in State Parliament last week, the Attorney General acknowledged that private practitioners doing legally aided work have not received a pay increase for 12 years and that the NSW rates are low compared with other states and well below market rates.

Members would be aware that the Law Society has been advocating for some time now for both an increase in the pay rate and the time claimable to undertake legal aid matters. We look forward to continuing our dialogue with the Attorney General about securing this additional funding sooner rather than later. Continue reading >

State Memorial Service for the Honourable Jane Mathews AO
The family of the Honourable Jane Mathews AO, the first woman appointed a judge of a NSW court, has accepted the Premier's offer of a State Memorial Service. Born in Wollongong, Justice Mathews passed away last month (31 August) aged 78.

The Legal Services Council is reviewing the Legal Profession Uniform General Rules relating to managed investment schemes. Submissions are invited with a closing date of 3 October 2019. More information is available on the Legal Services Council website.

Appointment of Mr Richard Cavanagh SC
Mr Richard Cavanagh SC has been appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of NSW. A formal ceremony to mark this occasion will be held in Banco Court, on Level 13, at 9:15am on Monday 16 September 2019. The ceremony will be notified in the law List on Thursday 12 September, Friday 13 September and Monday 16 September 2019. The ceremony will be followed by morning tea in the Judges' Dining Room on Level 13.

Applications open for the position of Registrar, Common Law Case Management, Supreme Court of NSW
The Supreme Court of NSW is seeking applications for an ongoing full-time role as Registrar, Common Law Case Management. Applicants must have extensive post-admission experience as a lawyer and have sound knowledge of the law and procedures applied in the NSW court system. Applications are open online through the I work for NSW website. Interested applicants will be required to submit a covering letter, resume and answer two pre-screening questions. Applications close at 11:59pm on 16 September 2019.
