District Court

Strict safety measures underpin the decision by the Chief Judge of the District Court to resume jury trials in courtrooms in Sydney’s Downing Centre, Newcastle District Court and the South West Trial Court Complex (Parramatta) on or from 15 June 2020. Read more here. The District Court has also issued a fact sheet for ensuring juror safety during COVID-19.

District Court Criminal Jurisdiction Directive

In order to deal with the number of criminal trials that have and may be vacated due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, The Honourable Justice D M Price AM, Chief Judge of the District Court, has directed that the Court will sit in its criminal jurisdiction from 18 January 2021 at the places in the attached Direction.

NSW Parliament to consider pandemic reforms

A special sitting of NSW Parliament is today considering a second set of laws to equip citizens, businesses and the justice system to address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Attorney General Mark Speakman SC has introduced three Bills for debate today. More details here.

Zero new cases in NSW overnight

NSW has recorded zero new cases of COVID-19 overnight. It is the first time since the pandemic began that zero new infections have been recorded in a day. More than 6,000 people were tested for the virus in NSW yesterday. Read more here.

Treasurer’s economic statement

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has delivered an economic update on the impact of COVID-19 to Federal Parliament. Australia is facing the largest deficit in our country’s fiscal history and GDP is forecast to fall by more than 10 per cent in the June quarter. The Treasurer says once all three stages of easing lockdown restrictions are completed, Australia's economy will grow by almost $10 billion a month. Read the Treasurer’s statement here.

Planning tool to help businesses reopen and be COVIDSafe

The National COVID-19 Coordination Commission has created an online planning tool to help business develop a plan to keep their workers, customers and the community safe as they reopen or increase their activities in the weeks and months ahead. Release of COVIDSafe App source code

The Law Council of Australia has welcomed the Australian Government's release of the COVIDSafe app source code saying the public release is consistent with the Law Council’s core regulatory design principles published on 24 April. More here.
