Public Law and Government
Sub-Committee
What we do
The Public Law and Government Sub-Committee offers a forum for lawyers and students who have a keen interest in public law, including constitutional law, administrative law, and their interactions with other areas of law.
The Sub-Committee facilitates discussion and regular updates on recent administrative and constitutional law developments including cases, policies, and legislation. The Sub-Committee's subscribers include solicitors who work in government roles, in private practice and in community legal centres, as well as barristers and academics. Subscribers often work in very different areas, ranging from licensing and commercial work, through criminal law to environment and property, native title and human rights.
Our Initiatives
- The Sub-Committee arranges guest speakers to attend its monthly meetings to provide individual practitioner perspectives about careers in administrative, constitutional or government law.
- The Sub-Committee runs annual events, such as ‘the Sir Anthony Mason Constitutional Law Address’, ‘How to Get a Job in Government’, and the ‘Canberra Road Trip’.
- The Sub-Committee also conducts a skills series throughout the year where fellow practitioners conduct a short talk on skills in public law such as advocacy, legal writing and interpretation.
