PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Welcome reform will ensure victims of sexual, domestic, and family violence can seek appropriate support

Last Friday, the NSW Attorney General, the Hon. Mark Speakman SC MP, announced that the NSW Parliament had passed some much-anticipated reforms which ensure frontline workers, as well as friends or family of adults who disclose sexual and domestic violence, will no longer risk facing prosecution for respecting a victim's wishes to not report the crime.

The amendments relate to section 316 of the Crimes Act 1900, which requires a person who knows or believes that a serious indictable offence has been committed to report it to the police. Continue reading >

2020 Law Society Council Election – Voting
Solicitor Members who have provided email addresses will be sent an email this week with an invitation to vote electronically in the 2020 Law Society Council election. The email includes a link to the electronic voting form. Twenty-six candidates have been nominated to fill seven (7) positions on Council (each for a 3-year term): Four (4) Councillor Reserved Positions (Large Firm, City, Suburban, Government) and three (3) Councillor Unreserved Positions. 

Printed voting papers will also be sent to all Solicitor Members. Members can vote electronically or by submitting a completed voting paper, but are encouraged to vote online to ensure their vote is received before the ballot closes at 2.00pm (AEDT) on Monday 19 October 2020.

The Annual General Meeting of The Law Society of New South Wales will be held at 4.30pm on Thursday 22 October 2020. See Notice.

Due to current COVID-19 social distancing requirements and in the interests of public health and the safety of our members, the Annual General Meeting will be held as a virtual meeting rather than members physically attending the meeting at the Law Society building. Please refer to the Notice for information on how members can attend and participate in the meeting.
