PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Building collective resilience and the future of courts in a post pandemic world

Last Monday night, we were honoured to have Professor Ian Hickey AM deliver the Annual Charles Xuereb Oration. His address on “Navigating mental health in the COVID era” provided an absolute ‘lightbulb moment’ for me when he spoke about resilience. Rather than focusing on individual resilience, he believes resilience is better conceptualised as a group characteristic; a product of teamwork. Becoming resilient, he said, isn’t about becoming “bullet-proof.” It’s more about being embedded within a community; supporting others when they struggle and accepting help when we’re doing it tough. Continue reading >

2021 Annual General Meeting – reminder to pre-register
The Annual General Meeting of The Law Society of New South Wales will be held as a virtual meeting on Thursday 28 October 2021 at 4.30pm (See Notice). To pre-register for the meeting, please click on the pre-registration link on the Annual General Meeting webpage.
Law Society Council Election – reminder
On Tuesday 28 September, an Invitation to Vote in the 2021 Law Society Council election was sent by email to Solicitor Members who had provided email addresses for communication purposes. The Invitation to Vote contains a unique voting link, which is personal to the recipient and must not be shared with, or forwarded to, anyone else. Members are encouraged to consider voting online to ensure your vote is received on a timely basis. Printed voting papers have also been sent to all Solicitor Members by post/DX. However, there may be delays in the delivery and return of printed materials due to the impact of COVID-19 on these services. If you are intending to return your completed ballot paper by post/DX, please do so urgently to ensure it is received at the Society prior to the close of the ballot at 2:00pm on Monday 25 October 2021. Enquiries should be directed to secretary@lawsociety.com.au.

Inmate device eBrief scheme
Over the past five years Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) has provided re-purposed laptops to more than 220 inmates to facilitate their access to electronic briefs. During this current pandemic, devices have been hard to obtain and CSNSW is not presently able to meet all requests. For information on how you can ensure that inmates have access to their briefs, click here.
ATO in-house facilitation service
The ATO's in-house facilitation service can help you resolve tax and super disputes. An accredited ATO facilitator meets with you, your representative, and the ATO officers to identify issues, develop options, consider alternatives and attempt to reach a solution. Every facilitator is a nationally accredited mediator and will guide the parties through the process to find some middle ground. Find out more.

Revenue NSW - Duties Documents Matrix updates
The Duties Document Matrix has been updated with new links to information and Revenue Rulings for surcharge purchaser duty, and options. A link has been added for new evidentiary requirements for transfers as a result of a break-up of a marriage or a de-facto relationship for superannuation interests s 68(3A). Possessory and primary applications have also been added to the Matrix.
