Our thoughts go out to all our colleagues dealing with the devastating floods

Our thoughts go out to all our colleagues dealing with the devastating floods across the state over the weekend, particularly those with homes, properties and practices on the North and Central Coast and in the Newcastle, Hunter and Hawkesbury-Nepean regions.

We are aware that many have been impacted with homes and practices being flooded overnight and more likely to be affected today.

We are reaching out to regional law societies in affected areas to see what assistance they might need and to check that they, their people and families are coping. It is important that regional practitioners do not feel isolated at this time.

We have been advised that Kempsey, Taree and Macksville Local Courts are closed today due to flooding in the region. The majority of matters due to be heard at Kempsey and Taree today will be adjourned to a later date. We understand that all parties will be advised.

Windsor Local Court is also closed today and will reopen when conditions safely allow.

In relation to District Court matters, we have been advised that should a practitioner who is impacted by the flooding have a matter listed before a particular judge to contact the judge’s associate directly. Contact details for judge’s associates are on the District Court website.

For more information about court listings or for any other enquiries please contact the NSW Court Service Centre on 1300 679 272.

In relation to Federal Circuit Court and Family Court of Australia matters, please contact the Courts via the National Enquiry Centre on 1300 352 000, or jointly approach the Chambers of the relevant Judge in the usual way should they have further queries.

Please also remember that the Law Society’s Solicitor Outreach Service (SOS) is also available to all NSW solicitors. It is free and confidential. Contact SOS on 1800 592 296.

In the meantime, please all stay safe.

Juliana Warner, President, the Law Society of NSW
