Roll of honour

In mid-2016, the Law Society of NSW unveiled an honour roll marking the service of NSW solicitors, articled clerks and law students who were killed in action in World War I.

On the evening of 19 July 2016, His Excellency the Honourable TF Bathurst AC, Lieutenant-Governor of New South Wales unveiled The Law Society of New South Wales Roll of Honour. The keynote speakers that evening included:

  • Gary Ulman, President, The Law Society of New South Wales;
  • The Hon. Tom Bathurst AC, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of NSW on "the impact of WWI on NSW Judiciary";
  • The Hon. William Victor Windeyer AM RFD ED, former judge of the Supreme Court of NSW on "the important role played by solicitors in the First World War".

This Honour Roll was compiled by cross-referencing various lists of names in the NSW Law Almanacs from 1920 to 1930, the records of the Law Institute of NSW, individual War Service Records and the War Memorial in the NSW Old Supreme Court Building. The list covers country and city solicitors and includes men who were solicitors at the time of their enlistment and those who were admitted afterwards - in total, 286 men, of whom 20 died in service. The roll includes details of medals for distinguished service and identifies those who died. It also lists law clerks, articled clerks and law students who died in the service of their country. About 200 barristers, law students, associates and articled clerks also served.

  1. Solicitors who served, and in some cases died, in the service of their country
  2. Law clerks and articled clerks who died in the service of their country
  3. Law students who died in the service of their country
