District Court NSW

On and from 1 June 2020, there will be some changes to the general policy that there are to be no personal appearances in the District Court of NSW. These changes are in addition to the announcement on 11 May of the intention to resume jury trials on a limited basis in the Sydney District Court, Parramatta District Court and Newcastle District Court. An Information Notice on the Courts’ National Arbitration List has been published on the Family Court of Australia and the Federal Circuit Court websites. Read more.

NSW students return to school

Students across NSW, from kindergarten to Year 12, will be back in the classroom full time from next Monday 25 May 2020. Read more here.

Free childcare scheme to end on 30 June

The Federal Government has today indicated it would not seek to extend its free childcare relief package beyond the 28 June 2020 end date.

COVID-19 safe transport plan

The NSW Government has today released its plan to provide a COVID-19 safe transport network. It includes avoiding peak-hour travel, maintaining physical distancing, and special event-style parking arrangements. More info here.

Small business online survey

The NSW Small Business Commissioner is conducting a survey on the impact of COVID-19 for small businesses across NSW. Information gathered from this survey will help the NSW Government explore future improvements for small businesses. Access the online survey here.

NSW Fair Trading

NSW Fair Trading has issued a statement of regulatory intent, setting out the enforcement approach that it will take to ensure compliance with the legislation it administers relating to occupational licensing, consumer and community protection, and regulated entities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Online COVIDSafe planning tool for business

The National COVID-19 Coordination Commission has developed an online planning tool to help business keep workers and customers safe as they reopen or increase activities in the coming weeks and months. The tool brings together information from across government on the range of help and assistance available to support businesses and complements the Safe Work Australia central information hub. COVID-19 job losses

Over the seven weeks from mid-March to early May, total payroll jobs fell by 7.3 per cent, according to new data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today. The latest data shows a further slowing in the fall in COVID-19 job losses between mid-April and early May. The largest net job losses over the seven weeks of the COVID-19 period, in percentage terms, were in Victoria and NSW. More here.
