NSW pandemic reforms

NSW Parliament has today passed three emergency bills to assist citizens, businesses and the justice system in managing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. View here (Attorney General’s portfolio), here (Treasurer’s portfolio) and here (miscellaneous).

Revenue NSW

A Commissioner's practice note: COVID-19 (coronavirus) and insurance premium is now available on the Revenue NSW website. The practice note provides guidance for insurers dealing with issues arising from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and will remain in force until the end of the 2020/2021 financial year. Class action inquiry

Federal Attorney-General Christian Porter has formally begun the process for a parliamentary committee inquiry which will examine all aspects of the class action system. A motion to refer the inquiry to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services is being considered by the House of Representatives today. More here.

Australia’s COVID-19 Health Response

The Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has announced the appointment of Associate Dr Ruth Vine as Australia’s first Deputy Chief Medical Officer for mental health to help direct the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A pandemic mental health plan will go before Friday’s National Cabinet meeting. The appointment has been welcomed by the National Mental Health Commission.

Industry Code for Visiting Residential Aged Care Homes

An ‘Industry Code for Visiting Residential Aged Care Homes during COVID-19’ has been released by 13 aged care peak bodies and consumer advocacy organisations. The Code creates a nationally consistent approach that ensures residents can receive visitors while minimising the risk of spreading COVID-19. More here.

Payment Times Reporting Bill 2020

Legislation introduced into Federal Parliament today will require large businesses and large government enterprises with a total annual income of over $100 million to report on how and when they pay their small business suppliers. View the Bill here.
