Activities
The Committee meets on the second Friday of each month at 6pm at the Law Society building to:
- discuss recent tax updates (usually income tax and GST) with tax practitioners working in various fields
- draft submissions to the Treasury, ATO, or other relevant organisations
- write articles for publication
- organise CLEs and discussion forums.
Aims
The Committee aims to:
- Provide a forum for young practitioners to meet other practitioners who share an interest in the field and discuss issues of relevance to their practice.
- Broaden knowledge of tax law and tax administration amongst the profession.
- Contribute a legal profession perspective to the improvement of the design and operation of taxation laws, including:
(i) the quality and effectiveness of tax legislation and the processes for its development, including participating in the processes of community consultation and other aspects of tax design
(ii) improvements to the general integrity and functioning of the taxation system.
- Advocate the best solutions to Australia’s taxation challenges through facilitating open dialogue within the legal profession and genuine, enduring partnerships between government and the legal profession.
- Inform the profession of developments in tax law and tax administration which affect their practice.
- Offer personal and professional development opportunities for young practitioners interested in tax law.
- Inspire others to develop an interest and practice in this area.
- Liaise and share information with government bodies and non-governmental organisations on tax, legal and administration issues and make submissions to these bodies where relevant.
- Monitor key international and domestic developments in this area, including Australia's double taxation treaties, tax reform reviews, revenue authority activity and judicial developments.
- Provide high quality CLEs on developments in tax law and tax administration and their effect on practitioners in NSW.
