A military lawyer and decorated officer in the Australian Defence Force is the winner of the 2014 Law Society of NSW President's Medal.

Law Society President, Ros Everett, has congratulated Lieutenant Commander Shannon Richards on his win, which was announced at the Law Society's Annual Members' Dinner in Sydney.

Lieutenant Commander Richards, Deputy Fleet Officer with the Royal Australian Navy, is also the founder of KidsXpress, a charity dedicated to helping young children develop coping mechanisms to deal with trauma in their lives. Lieutenant Commander Richards has been a non-executive director and legal counsel on the board of the charity for more than a decade.

He is also an ambassador for White Ribbon, Australia's campaign to stop violence against women and a current member of the Law Society's Government Solicitors Committee.

"His passion and tireless dedication in protecting and safeguarding children coupled with his legal skills and corporate governance experience has been invaluable to KidsXpress, " Ms Everett said.

"His military service and commitment to the law, his country and the community has earned him the highest respect and makes him a very worthy recipient of this year's medal. "
