Mentoring Program

2012 NSW Young Lawyers Mentoring Program

The NSW Young Lawyers Mentoring Program unites newly admitted lawyers seeking guidance and support with more experienced ones who are willing to volunteer their time to assist those just starting out in their careers.

To ensure mentors and mentees forge mutually beneficial relationships, the Mentoring Program offers several unique characteristics.

Compatibility – be paired with someone who suits your personality, interests or practice area.

Confidentiality – all discussions between mentors and mentees remain strictly private to ensure trust, honesty and openness.

Impartiality – talk to a lawyer outside your immediate work environment.

Empathy – learn from a laywer who understands what you’re going through.

Flexibility – choose how and when to interact and what you will discuss.

Support – introductory dinner, plus a mentoring information session and handbook.

What's involved?

The Mentoring Program starts at the beginning of the year. There is an initial information session and a dinner to introduce mentors and mentees.

Throughout the year a mentor and mentee are expected to meet regularly to discuss predefined issues. The Program Coordinator is available to assist with any questions or issues that may arise.

At the end of the Program participants are invited to provide feedback. A mentoring relationship may continue after this if agreed by the parties.

Who can apply?

Mentors and mentees must be members of the Law Society of NSW. Mentees must also be under the age of 36 or in their first five years of practice. Mentors must be experienced lawyers willing to provide encouragement and advice on a voluntary basis for approximately one hour a month for a one-year period.
