CIArb/YL International Arbitration Moot
The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators/Young Lawyers International Arbitration Moot is an annual competition held at the Australian International Disputes Centre in Sydney, Australia. The competition is the only one of its kind in Australia and has attracted young lawyers from Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth and Brisbane.
This competition has cemented its place as a progressive and high quality competition and is a showcase of the appeal of arbitration amongst young lawyers in Australia. Each year, 20 young lawyers compete in four rounds of mooting in front of arbitral panels consisting of 3 experienced arbitration practitioners. All teams have the opportunity to represent both the claimant and respondent in a problem question that incorporates the common issues that arise in international arbitration.
This event is also a great opportunity to experience the real world of arbitration and network with some of the pre-eminent professionals in the field to discuss the recent changes to both the state and federal legislation on arbitration.
The competition has been a resounding success with a very high quality of mooting displayed each year.
The Competition’s main prize for Best Orator, kindly donated by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Australia, is a place in the Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration Course. The course is run jointly by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Australia and the University of New South Wales. The prize is valued at over $7000.
Other prizes are awarded for 'Winning Team', 'Best Written Submissions' and 'Spirit of the Arbitration Moot'. Book prizes for these categories have been kindly donated by The Federation Press, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Kluwer Law International, Thomson Reuters, Lexis Nexis, ICC Australia, and Globe Law and Business.
We welcome Young Lawyers (lawyers under the age of 36 or in their first five years of practice) and students from around the country to apply to compete in this unique competition.
