International Law Committee

Activities and events

We seek to promote informed discussion amongst our members, the profession and the broader community on international legal developments affecting our nation, and to provide a distinctive Australian perspective on contemporary international legal issues. The Committee’s activities centre upon:

  • providing a forum for young practitioners and students to network with other practitioners who share an interest in this field and discuss issues of relevance to their practice
  • broadening knowledge of public and private international law amongst the profession
  • informing the profession of developments in international legal framework, both private and public, which affect their practice
  • offering personal and professional development opportunities for young practitioners interested in the field of international law, and to inspire others to develop an interest and practice in this area
  • liaising and sharing information with government bodies, international governmental organisations, and non-governmental organisations on international legal issues and make submissions to these bodies where relevant
  • monitoring key international and domestic developments in this area, including Australia's adherence to its international obligations in the areas covered by the Committee
  • providing high-quality CLE seminars on developments in international legal norms and principles and their effect on practitioners in NSW.

Submissions

By monitoring all areas of international law, we are able to use our knowledge and skills to develop submissions and in turn, play a role in shaping debate and influencing legal developments relating to international law. View international law submissions on the Young Lawyers Submissions page.

Events

It's not all about work! Networking evenings, competitions and social outings are very much part of our Committee’s activities.

Ultimately, through our Committee, we aim to create a network of like-minded people and organisations that are passionate about international law.

In turn, we create the opportunity to be part of the global international law network, establishing links with local and international organisations, such as the Red Cross, the United Nations, and the Australia and New Zealand Society of International Law.

CIArb/YL International Arbitration Moot

In May 2009, in co-operation with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Australia (CIArb), the Committee staged the inaugural CIArb/YL International Arbitration Moot.

This co-operation will continue in 2011, with the 3rd CIArb/YL International Arbitration Moot to be held on Saturday 10 September 2011 at the Australian International Disputes Centre.

Projects

Sri Lankan War Crimes Evidence
In April 2010, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and NSW Young Lawyers launched a new collaborative project to gather evidence of war crimes in Sri Lanka from witnesses to the long-running civil conflict between Sri Lankan Government forces and the Tamil Tigers. It is hoped the evidence will eventually be used in a war crimes tribunal, the establishment of which is currently under consideration by the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Alternatively, it is anticipated that any cogent evidence of war crimes which emerges from the project might persuade the Australian Government to prosecute individuals under the principle of universal jurisdiction.
