Meetings
Our monthly meetings are our major activity, providing members with the opportunity to discuss projects currently in development as well as issues in employment and industrial law. We also invite senior practitioners to our meetings to speak to us on current topics; ensuring young practitioners have the opportunity to discuss issues in a semi-informal environment. To view the discussions from recent meetings, download the following minutes:
Topics and speakers at past meetings include:
- Advocacy tips from the Bar – Elizabeth Raper, Barrister, 5th Floor Wentworth Chambers
- Surviving as a young lawyer in difficult economic times – Stephen Woodbury, Partner, Blake Dawson
- The similarities and differences between Australian and French legal professions and Labour Law – Frederic Calinaud, French employment lawyer
- The Intersections of Privacy Law and Employment Law – Olga Ganopolosky
- Conciliation of Discrimination Law Disputes –Tory Kakoschke, Conciliator at the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission

Events
The Employment and Industrial Law Committee organises a number of professional activities and social networking opportunities for young and newly practising lawyers throughout the year. These include:
Annual Charity Trivia Night
Every year in August the Committee hosts a trivia night to raise money for charity. The 2010 Charity Trivia Night, sponsored by Freehills, was held on 5 August. All proceeds were donated to the Tristan Jepson Memorial Fund.
Annual McCallum Medal Presentation Competition
The McCallum is an annual speaking competition for law students and young lawyers with an employment and industrial law focus. It is sponsored by Clayton Utz, Thomson Reuters and the College of Law and is named in honour of Professor Ron McCallum, a patron of NSW Young Lawyers and a leading academic in the field.
