About us
The Communications, Entertainment & Technology Law Committee is comprised of lawyers and law students who share an interest in the laws relating to the IT, Media and Entertainment sectors.
Our membership is diverse and includes private practitioners, corporate counsel, government officers and law students.
Many of us have combined legal and industry experience. Our areas of priority include regulation of content, electronic commerce, technology for lawyers, intellectual property and communication.
Mission statement
The Communications, Entertainment & Technology Law Committee (CET) aims to serve the interests of lawyers, law students and other members of the community concerned with areas of law relating to:
- information and communication technology (including technology affecting legal practice);
- intellectual property
- advertising and consumer protection
- confidential information and privacy
- entertainment
- the media.
CET members achieve this aim through regular discussion about the law (including court decisions, legislation, industry codes, guidelines, and codes and standards of practice), networking, and educational and policy review activities, consistent with the NSW Young Lawyers’ Constitution.
As innovation inevitably challenges custom, CET promotes forward thinking, particularly about the shape of the law and the legal profession as a whole.
History
Originally named the Information and Technology Committee, our committee has been operating since early 1996. We later changed our name to the Communications, Entertainment and Technology (CET) Committee to reflect our additional focus on communications technology.
Past Chairs of CET include Adam Flynn (2005-2010), Tyrilly Bolton (Vice Chair, 2008-2009) Andrew Perry (2000-2005), Jason Geisker (2003-2005), Craig Glazier (2002-2003), Jonathan Bolton (1999), Fiona O’Loughlin (1997-1998) and Monique Boutet (1996).
For some time CET operated as an exclusively online committee but in November 2006 we recommenced monthly meetings at the NSW Law Society. Our members continue to actively use our email list to report news and discuss issues.
Since 2009, CET has operated four active Special Interest Groups (SIGs): Communications, Entertainment, Technology and Marketing. The creation of these groups allows members to engage in discussion across the broad areas of interest held by committee members.
Some of our activities have included:
- making submissions and organising CLE seminars on legislative reforms
- conducting the 2009 Generation Z student essay competition
- hosting special guest speakers, including Mr Laurie Patton (Chief Executive of Television Sydney (TVS)) and Mr Andy Nehl (producer of The Chaser and The Lawrence Leung Show) in 2008
- running a series of public forums on copyright reform at Arts Law Week 2007
- publishing summaries and commentaries of legislative proposals relating to information technology reform (1996)
In addition to our regular activities, our Committee was actively involved in establishing an Internet presence for NSW Young Lawyers. The Committee has been active in recommending, to the Executive Council, the content and technology to be considered in the design of this site and its predecessor and the member email lists used by each of the NSW Young Lawyers Committees.
