President's Message – July/August 2010

Your organisation, NSW Young Lawyers, is changing. In 2010, the organisation has made great strides to become more inclusive and transparent. Moreover, it is striven to begin new conversations, and renew its connections, with its members, including young professionals, students and regional/suburban young practitioners.

Recently, NSW Young Lawyers published its Transparency and Accountability webpage, which includes information about the Council of the organisation and includes minutes of a number of our previous assemblies. We see this as a step forward in our relationship with our members, to build trust between them and the Council of NSW Young Lawyers, the members of which are indirectly elected from the ranks of the profession.

Just under a week ago, I formally launched our 'Creating Networks' initiative, aimed at creating groupings of our regional and suburban members and connecting them to NSW Young Lawyers.  In time, we envisage this initiative will create support/information networks for young practitioners in regional and suburban NSW.  A major benefit of this approach is that regional and suburban members will be able to lead the project on the ground and create groupings in a way that suits their fellow practitioners.

Our relationship with our student members is deepening and we now have many more students involved in our exciting Committees than before.  I encourage our student members to become involved.  Not only will involvement in the organisation be rewarding by increasing your knowledge of issues that the profession currently faces, but it also prepares you for the realities of work as a lawyer, including the realities of job seeking and furthering your career.

If you have any other questions, please email me.
