President's Message – January 2010
I hope you have had a safe and relaxing holiday and a great start to the New Year.
This year has begun with much excitement and energy from our members, who have re-started their Committees' projects from 2009 and looking to do more for the profession and community in 2010.
We are looking forward to a number of high-profile events during the first half of the year. On 9 and 10 February, Young Lawyers will be co-hosting a conference on cross-border issues that features speeches by Justice Antonin Scalia of the Supreme Court of the United States and Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG, former Justice of the High Court of Australia. The conference will be followed by a moot court demonstration which pits Australian advocates against their American colleagues. This is an event not to miss!
On 21 May of this year, Young Lawyers will hold its coveted Golden Gavel Competition. If you are a budding comedian and would like to compete, please email me and we will give you the chance to compete with the best comedic minds of the legal profession.
In the next month, Young Lawyers will be taking steps to implement a comprehensive policy towards its student members to have them more involved in the organisation. I invite all of our student members to become involved in this project and I look forward to meeting you at our various events and gatherings this year.
It is going to be an exciting year for this organisation. I look forward to working with you!
