In Focus series

The Law Society presents our first ever In-Focus series, giving students the opportunity to connect with some of our members from different practice areas. The series is educating, connecting and supporting law students in forcing a successful career in the legal industry.
We will be posting across social media using the hashtag #InFocusInLaw so make sure you follow the hashtag and our social media accounts to stay up to date.

Applications for UTS Law students to attend upcoming networking lunches are open. Students can submit their applications here. Read more about this event below.

Initiative One: In-house Practice

Our first initiative in the series will be on In-House and Corporate Practice and in partnership with UTS. The initiative is designed to help law students at UTS who are interested in a career in-house.

Event One: Social Media Video Series

All about in-house practice, will consist of a video series featuring in-house lawyers from large companies who will answer all your burning questions on practicing as an in-house lawyer, especially as someone entering the field at a more junior level. Find out more about what the day to day duties of an in-house lawyer entails, how the role differs from a commercial lawyer and what the career progression is like.

Event Two: Networking Lunches

We are also giving a select number of students some face time with in-house lawyers. On the 29th of September and the 5th of October, the Law Society of NSW will be hosting two lunch events where UTS Law students will be given the chance to have lunch and network in a casual setting with a number of top in-house lawyers. A two course sit-down lunch will be served to all attendees and you will have the chance to hear from not only the top in-house lawyers but also from the Law Society’s In-House Segment Manager, who will be speaking to you about the resources available to in-house lawyers while also sharing her knowledge on everything about corporate practice. Spaces are limited so we ask that all interested parties submit a registration form. Then, from these applications, a number of students will be chosen to participate in these lunch events. Applications are currently open for UTS students to apply for a spot to meet and network with our top corporate lawyers. Click here here to apply for a spot at the In-Focus lunches on the 29th of September or on the 5th of October. You will be informed one week before the lunch if you have been a successful applicant

Initiative Two: Government Practice

Our second initiative in the series will be held in partnership with the University of Sydney and will be on Government Practice. This series will help students interested in practicing as a government lawyer to get a better understanding of what it takes to land a job, what to expect in your first year and how to create a career map once they have started working as a Government Lawyer.

Event One: Panel "A Day in the Life of a Government Lawyer"

The first event will be a panel event held at the University of Sydney, with some of the top government lawyers sitting on the panel. Students will have a chance to engage with these lawyers and ask them all the questions that they want to know about government practice. This event is scheduled to be held in Semester One in 2018. This panel will be an open event and all Sydney University Law Students are invited to attend.

Event Two: Videos with Government Lawyers

The Law Society and Sydney University will be providing a short series of video Q & As with government lawyers. Students from Sydney University will have the opportunity to pick the questions that we will ask the lawyers. If you have any questions you would like to ask our Government Lawyers, please email graduateservices@lawsociety.com.au. Make sure you follow LegalVitae on Facebook and Instagram to have your say. These videos will be released in Semester Two, 2018.

Event Three: Networking Lunches

The networking lunches with government lawyers will be a chance for a select number of students to get some face time with government lawyers at a sit-down lunch event held at the University of Sydney. This event will be held at the end of Semester Two in 2018.

Initiative Three: Private Practice

Our third initiative in the series will be held in partnership with the University of New South Wales and will be on Private Practice. This series will help students interested in practicing within private practice to get a better understanding of what it takes to land a job, what to expect to in your first year and how to create a career map once you start working.

Event One: Panel "A Day in the Life of a Private Practice Lawyer"

LegalVitae and UNSW will be hosting a panel event featuring a number of private practice lawyers. Students will be able to attend to learn more about the experiences of private practice lawyers, what to expect in their first year of work and learn some new and unexpected factors of working in commercial law. There will also be a Q & A at the end so students will be able to interact with the lawyers and ask the lawyers any questions they have. This event will be held in Semester Two of 2018.

Event Two: Videos with Private Practice Lawyers

All your questions answered – we sit down with a number of private practice lawyers to answer all your questions on getting into the profession, networking and professional development, job applications, career advancement and everything else in between. These videos will be shareable on social media and we invite you to send through any questions you would like answered by the lawyers. Ensure you are following the LegalVitae Facebook page to view these videos. If you have any questions you would like to see answered, please send them to us at graduateservices@lawsociety.com.au

Event Three: Networking Lunches

Rub elbows with some of the top private practice young lawyers in NSW.
