Applying for a Practising Certificate

To apply for a NSW Practising Certificate follow these procedures:

  1. Download the Application form for a Practising Certificate & Membership of the Law Society of New South Wales.
  2. Fully complete the application form – answer all questions, sign the form and attach any additional documentation (e.g. Certificate of Fitness from another jurisdiction).
  3. Send the completed application, together with payment of fees, to the Law Society Registry.

For an explanation of the type of certificate you may be eligible to hold see Practising Certificate types.

What happens next?

Applications are normally processed in two to three weeks. The Law Society will contact you if further details are required.

There may be some circumstances where an application has to be referred to the Licensing Committee for consideration.

If you change your practising arrangements you may be required to change the type of Practising Certificate you hold. For more information see the Changing your Practising Certificate section of this website.
