Thought Leadership

From time to time, the Law Society will run Thought Leadership Programs to encourage discussion on topics that will shape the legal profession into the future.  From these discussions, we will seek to provide policy guidelines, strategies or other practical tools for the profession to consider and implement as appropriate.

The Advancement of Women

One of our initial formal programs is looking at the remaining impediments to the advancement of women in the legal profession.  By highlighting success stories and gathering information from all segments of legal practice, our aim is to identify effective strategies which can be disseminated and promoted across the profession.

Symposium on Billing Practices

Our other thought leadership project for 2011 is a symposium on billing practices which was held on 5 July 2011. Thirty-six invitees, reflecting a cross-section of CBD, suburban and country practitioners, examined current time billing practices and fee charging methods to critically analyse, refine and modernise current fee structures and billing practices.

A discussion paper and notes have been prepared following the symposium.

An article on the effective use of current time billing practices, "Realistic Time Billing: In defence of the billable hour", was published in the June edition of The Law Society Journal.
